Tips to deter shoplifters

Kevin Plante from KMP Security Consulting offered many great tips to deter shoplifting during our recent webinar on the topic. According to Kevin, shoplifters don’t want to be recognized or acknowledged when they enter a store and they’ll do their best to escape notice. While honest shoppers will see these attempts to engage them as good customer service, a shoplifter will know he/she doesn’t stand much of a chance of stealing from you:

1. Make eye contact with customers when they enter your store.
2. If the person is carrying other shopping bags, offer to hold them at the register so his/her hands are free to shop.
3. If the person declines help, still check in with him/her periodically.
4. Engage in small talk with the customer. Comment on the specific items the customer has chosen or point out complementary products.
